Sasha Alexander Is An Actress. She is Not a Celebrity.
I think far too often in today’s Hollywood landscape we confuse celebrities with actors and actresses, but there is a difference. A true actress embodies her role. She becomes that character. From the moment she steps in front of the camera until the moment she steps away, she breathes life into that role.
An actress can take any part, no matter how large or small or how well or poorly written, and transform it into a fully fleshed out, believable person. From her body language to her spoken word, an actress creates who that character is through the emotion she projects, and it is a skill to be able to do this well and consistently.
If you have someone that plays, essentially, the same character in every role in which they perform, there is no skill there. There may be some sort of innate talent for remembering lines and hitting marks, but, if that individual isn’t creating a new person for each new character - regardless of how similar those characters may be -that person is not acting. If you have a hard time knowing what character that person is supposedly portraying when you look at a still of them when they are in character, you are looking at a celebrity.
Sasha Alexander is an actress. She fully embodies every role she takes on. If we placed stills side-by-side of any and/or every role she’s ever taken on, we could tell at a glance who each of those characters are. From her minute facial expressions to her ability to place vocal inflection and intonation for different characters to the way she changes her body language for each role, she continually creates new, believable, fleshed out people.
Sasha is not a celebrity. She is not famous for being famous. She is not famous simply for her looks or for saying something outlandish. She has created for herself through her talent and skills a fan base that appreciates her and a vast array of roles that are so very different that you cannot help but step back and appreciate her ability to embody such diverse characters.
I feel it’s important for us to recognize the true actresses from the celebrities. Meryl Streep is an actress. Audrey Hepburn was an actress. Jeri Ryan is an actress. Glen Close is an actress. Lucille Ball was an actress. I feel Sasha Alexander falls into this same category. Does anyone else agree?
